Dear LSE Parents,

Welcome back to another great school year!  Our school-wide theme for this year is “High Performance for All”.  I am proud to announce that our school’s application for the International Baccalaureate program has been approved.  We are excited about this new program for our school community. Teachers will be receiving a lot of specialized training on how to increase rigor and maximizing the learning experience for all students.  Please plan to attend our Open House on August 2, 2018 1:00 p,m. – 3:00 p.m.  The first day of school is on August 6, 2018.  More information about the International Baccalaureate program will be shared with our parents during PTA meetings, school council meetings, and via letters/newsletters. I hope you enjoyed your children this summer, but it is time for them to come back to school.  We are so excited to have them back in school!  We are looking forward to working with you this school year to ensure that your child has an exciting year of learning.  We want you to be just as excited about the new school year.  This is a time of year where educators and parents make a new commitment to work together/partner to make sure that all of our students have a wonderful school year.

Mrs. Bryant, parent liaison, has some awesome ideas and strategies to share with our parents.  Please plan to attend some of her workshops throughout the school year.  We need your support and want you to commit to becoming a volunteer at our school.  All of our volunteers have to complete a background check.  Parents are always welcome to schedule a conference with your child’s teacher at any time, visit your child’s classroom, eat lunch with your child, and attend field trips.  You are not required to have a background check to visit your child at school.  Please see Mrs. Bryant, parent liaison, for the background check form if you are interested in volunteering regularly or when time permits in your schedule at the school.  She will be glad to answer questions about this process.

It is important that our students and staff are safe in our building.  All visitors are to report to the front office door in order to be allowed to enter our building.  We have a video camera system that allows us to see who will be entering the building.  The front office secretary will unlock the door for visitors to enter into the front office when the visitor identifies themselves and their purpose for visiting the school.  The school doors are secure at all times.  All students are expected to be in their classrooms at 7:45 a.m.  Your child is tardy for school if he/she arrives at school after 7:45 a.m.  Parents are required to come into the front office to sign your child in when your child arrives at school after 7:45 a.m.  All visitors are required to sign in and wear proper labels identifying them as a visitor in the building.  We greatly appreciate your support in ensuring that our students and staff are safe while our students are learning and teachers are instructing.  Parents, please know that “missing school matters” in grades Pre-K-5th grade.  When your child misses school, he or she misses out on valuable information.  We are asking that you make a major commitment to having your child arrive at school on time and miss fewer days this school year than last year.

It is also important that parents support us in maintaining our bus and car lanes as safe areas for students to be dropped off in the morning and picked up in the afternoons.  Therefore, the bus lane is only a drop-off and pick-up location for CCPS school buses and after school nursery buses.  Car riders are not to be dropped off or picked up in the bus lane.  Car riders can only be dropped off and picked up in the car lane.  Car riders can be dropped off beginning at 7:00 a.m.  Please do not drop your children off earlier than 7:00 a.m.  This is very unsafe and will be a violation of our school policy.  Our teachers and staff are not on duty until 7:15 a.m.  We have limited staff members that are able to supervise the children prior to 7:15 a.m.  We truly need your support in working together to ensure that our bus and car rider lanes are safe.  All Clayton County Public Schools will be serving free breakfast and lunch to all students this school year.  Parents will not have to complete applications for free and reduced lunch.

We love to celebrate birthdays at LSE!  However, classroom teachers are only allowed to have two celebrations during the school year.  We will have a “winter holiday” party and an “end of the year” party. There are many special days throughout the school year, for example valentine’s day.  Students can exchange valentine day cards, but we do not take time during our instructional day to have a valentine day party. We do not have birthday parties during the school instructional hours.  Parents will be allowed to bring cupcakes or a cake to be served during lunch to your child’s classmates. Teachers and cafeteria staff will not be available to assist with cutting the cake or distributing cupcakes.

Students are dismissed from school at 2:15 p.m.  All students must be picked up on time.  If you have an emergency, please contact the front office secretary to notify her of your arrival time.  It is important to always ensure that your contact information/telephone number is updated in our student information system.  If your child is not picked up before 2:45 p.m., a staff member will contact you about picking up your child.  Parents picking their child up after 2:45 p.m. will be required to come into the front office to sign your child out.  We have limited available staff that is available to supervise students in the afternoon.  Please support us by picking your child up on time daily from school. Transportation changes will not be accepted via fax or email.  Please send in a written signed note with your contact information for us to call and verify the change.  You can also come in the front office and complete a transportation change.  Please bring your identification in when making transportation changes and/or checking out your child. All transportation changes need to be made prior to 1:45 p.m.

All LSE students are required to wear uniforms to school (Pre-K -5th grade) Monday-Friday.  This is a district policy and parents will be contacted when students are not dressed in their uniform.  Our uniform colors are red, blue, and white collar shirts/blouses and blue, black, and khaki pants, shorts, dresses, or skirts (no jeans, leggings, or jeggings).  Students can only wear shoes that cover their feet completely.  It is recommended that they wear sneakers for physical education/recess.  We are asking you to support us in making sure your child is properly dressed each day for school.

If your child is absent from school, please send a note to your child’s homeroom teacher the next day your child returns to school explaining your child’s absence.  Parents have 3 days, beginning with the day your child returns to school, to submit a parent note or doctor’s excuse explaining your child’s absence.  We need for your child to be on time daily for school We are preparing our students for the future by starting now teaching them the importance of arriving “on time”.

Student afternoon check-outs are NOT allowed after 1:45 p.m.  If you need to check your child out of school, please do this prior to 1:45 p.m.  Attempting to check your child out after this time interferes with our dismissal procedures.  Repeated early check-outs are also monitored by administration.  When students are frequently checked out of school early, this disrupts their learning and limits them from receiving valuable information that is being provided by their classroom teacher.  The minutes that your child is missing each day as a result of a series of early check-outs and tardies to school can add up to be counted as an absence for a full day.  This is the way our student information system (Infinite Campus) calculates tardies and early check-outs.  If your child accumulates 3 or more unexcused absences, you will be contacted about attending an attendance meeting concerning absences and tardies.

You can monitor your child’s grades through the parent portal on Infinite Campus.  Please log on through the district’s website.  If you need assistance with your username and password, please contact Mrs. Reaginia

Please be advised that the district does have professional development days scheduled for school employees and students will be out of school of those days.  We will send reminders in advance about professional development days.

We have an afterschool childcare program available to all parents and their children.  Please see Ms. Scott or contact the front office for information about signing-up your child to participate in the program.  Registration is $15.00 and the weekly rate/fee is $40.00.  Drop-ins are also available to our parents for days when you may be running behind and need a little more time.  You will need to pay the registration fee of $15.00 and the drop-in fee for that day.

Again, I want to thank you for your support.  We are looking forward to working with you this school year.  Please do not hesitate to call on us for anything concerning your child.  Our ultimate goal is to strengthen our partnership with parents and stakeholders, building upon a spirit of collaboration and support for all of our students.  Let’s really work together to make sure all of our students have a successful year!
